Parents & Guardians

If your son or daughter is thinking about a plumbing apprenticeship, it’s natural to have questions. Who will they actually be working for? Will they be safe? Will they be properly trained and supported? This page answers the questions parents ask us most, and explains how Master Plumbers Apprentices looks after your child from their first day on the job through to becoming a qualified plumber.

Who we are

Master Plumbers Apprentices has been placing and supporting plumbing apprentices across New South Wales since 1982. We’re a “plumbing industry specific” Group Training Organisation (GTO) — in plain terms, this means plumbing is all we do, and we’ve helped more than 2,000 apprentices qualify as plumbing tradespeople.

We were established by, and remain a proud member of, the Master Plumbers and Mechanical Contractors Association of NSW — the peak industry body for licensed plumbing businesses in New South Wales.

What does a Group Training Organisation actually do?

This is often the first question parents ask, so it’s worth explaining clearly. Rather than your child applying directly to a single employer, they are formally employed by Master Plumbers Apprentices. We then place them with a “host employer” — a plumbing business that provides the day-to-day, on-the-job training.

This arrangement gives your child two layers of support instead of one:

  • We select and vet every host employer before placing an apprentice with them.
  • We stay involved for the life of the apprenticeship — checking in, monitoring progress, and stepping in if problems arise.
  • If a placement doesn’t work out, we can seek to re-place your child with another host employer.
Will they be safe and properly supervised?

Yes — and this is something we check before any apprentice is placed. Our host employers range from large contracting companies to sole traders, working across residential, commercial, industrial, mechanical and civil plumbing. Whatever the size of the business, every host must demonstrate they can provide appropriate supervision and a genuinely safe place of work before we place an apprentice with them.

What support does my child get along the way?

An apprenticeship is a big commitment, irrespective of their age, and we don’t just place your child and disappear. Master Plumbers Apprentices actively recruits, trains, mentors and provides ongoing support services throughout the apprenticeship — including help with training obligations, workplace issues, and general guidance as they learn the trade.

What will they come out with?

On completion, your child will hold a nationally recognised trade qualification and be eligible for registration as a qualified plumber — a genuine, well-respected trade with strong ongoing demand across NSW. Plumbing offers real long-term career options, whether that’s staying on with an employer, moving between residential, commercial or civil work, or eventually running their own business.
